Suri Breed Standard

The Suri Breed Standard was developed by the Suri Network with input from all Suri breeders, and approved in 2006. The breed standard is a set of guidelines which is used to ensure that the Suris produced by a breeder conform to the specifics of the standardized breed. In other livestock breeds, standards are devised by breed associations, not by individuals, and are written to reflect the use or purpose of the species and breed of the animal.

The goal for a Suri breed standard is to help define the ideal Suri and provide goals for breeders in improving stock. In essence the breed standard is a blueprint for an animal fit for the function it was bred.

Breed standards are not set in stone. They are expected to evolve over time as a breed continues to improve. Since it has been ten years since the original Suri breed standard was adopted, it is time for the standard to be updated to reflect the trends in the industry.

Early in 2016, a Breed Standard Committee was appointed by the Suri Network Board of Trustees: Tim Sheets and Linda Kondris served as co-chairs. Other members were Amanda VandenBosch, Cheryl Gehly, Gail Campbell, Karl Heinrich, and Board liaison Randy Coleman. The committee met and developed a draft revision, which was then reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees.

The next step in the process is for Suri Network membership to provide feedback on the draft. It has been made available at Suri Network rallies, through direct email communication with members, and via social media. It is also available here for you to review.

The Suri Network Board of Trustees will review member feedback and prepare the final document for vote. The final revised Breed Standard to the membership for vote in June, 2016.

As with the original standard, we value the input of our members and are seeking your input before the revised breed standard is put to a vote.  Please take time to review the proposed revision and compare it to the original.  Then, add any comments or questions to the forum at the bottom of this page.

Suri Network Farm/Ranch members are encouraged to comment; log in to the website in the top right corner of your screen.
