WEAVING SURI

Weaving is a fiber art where Suri is able to truly demonstrate its outstanding qualities. While yarn twists and turns when it is crocheted or knitted, weaving keeps yarn parallel with the surface of the piece which allows it to show off its luster and silky hand. The fact that Suri takes dye so well allows your projects to glow with wonderful colors. if you choose to use dyed yarns.

WHY WEAVE WITH SURI? WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • Weaving and Suri go hand in hand. The art and the fiber were made for one another!
  • Suri is a straight fiber, which translates to drape – a valued characteristic of woven fabrics.
  • Suri fibers have low scale height, which translates to luster. Woven Suri fabric glistens as it ebbs and flows with a person’s every movement.
  • Suri has a beautiful hand, making the fabric feel luscious.
  • Drape, luster, beautiful hand – all make for a stunning fabric.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF SURI YARN FOR WEAVING?

  • Suri spins thin! 100% Suri yarn in an 8/2 or higher worsted count is ideal for woven fabrics.
  • For heavier weight yarns from 7/2 or lower, look for a blend of Suri with a loftier fiber such as standard alpaca or wool. As the yarn thickness increases, the percentage of Suri should decline.
  • With Suri’s wonderful drape and its warmth, these yarns work well for items such as outerwear or blankets.
  • While yarn twists and turns when it is crocheted or knitted, weaving keeps yarn parallel with the surface of the piece which allows it to show off its luster and silky hand.
  • Suri takes a dye beautifully. For weaving, the intensity of the dyed colors stands out and creates an eye-catching fabric.
  • Suri fiber has one of the highest tensile strengths of any animal fiber, which makes it an outstanding fiber for warp as well as weft.
  • Weaving with 100% Suri or blends with a high percentage of Suri provide you with a smooth hand and allow for visually complex patterns to shine through.

HOW DO I USE MY FINE SURI YARN WITH WEAVING?

  • Fine Suri is most often found in lighter weight yarns (8/2 worsted count or higher) .
  • These types of yarns lend themselves to garments worn close to the skin, such as scarves and shawls.
  • Consider mid-grade Suri yarns in the 23-25.9 micron range for items such as capes, light outerwear, skirts, or pants.

HOW DO I USE MY STRONGER (COARSER) YARNS?

  • The thicker the fiber, the heavier it is. As such, be sure coarser Suri is blended with a lofty fiber.
  • Coarser Suri is still beautiful, but must be used in the proper type of project. Consider garments and home goods items that take abrasion, such as heavier weight outerwear, blankets, or other home good items, as examples.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR WEAVING

  • Sett is important! Every fiber is different, and every blend is different. So sample your yarns before starting the full project to determine your ends per inch and your picks per inch.
  • While Suri and Suri blends will always provide drape, getting the right sett will maximize that drape!
